An insurance survey is intended to evaluate the vessel's overall condition, safety, and insurability while providing a current valuation for the insurance carrier.
A pre-purchase survey is more comprehensive and focuses on identifying deficiencies, evaluating major systems, and helping a prospective buyer make an informed purchasing decision.
-
For the most comprehensive survey, yes.
A haul-out allows inspection of:
Bottom condition
Keel
Rudder
Running gear
Through-hull fittings
Propellers
Shafts
Hull moisture (where applicable)
Some insurance surveys can be completed in the water, depending on the insurer's requirements.
-
A visual inspection of readily accessible machinery and systems is included within the scope of most surveys.
This does not replace a comprehensive mechanical inspection performed by an engine manufacturer or certified marine mechanic. When appropriate, Love Maritime Group may recommend further evaluation by a qualified specialist.
-
Yes.
Visual inspections of standing rigging, spars, chainplates, and associated hardware are available.
Depending on the scope, inspections may be conducted:
From deck level
Aloft
In conjunction with a professional rigger
-
Typical inspection times (rough estimates depending on conditions):
Trailerable boats: 2–4 hours
Sailboats: 2–8 hours
Powerboats: 2–8 hours
Commercial vessels: Varies based on size and scope
-
A properly prepared vessel allows for a more complete inspection.
Before the survey:
✔ Charge all batteries
✔ Ensure engines can be started
✔ Provide keys and combinations
✔ Unlock lockers and compartments
✔ Remove gear blocking access
✔ Provide access to bilges
✔ Provide access to electrical panels
✔ Provide access to fuel and water tanks where practical
✔ Ensure shore power is available if needed
✔ Have sails available if they are to be inspected
✔ Have maintenance records available
✔ Have registration/documentation available
✔ Notify the surveyor of known defects or recent repairs
-
No. Your presence is not required.
Many clients choose to drop off the vessel and return once the inspection is complete. This allows the surveyor to conduct a thorough, systematic inspection without interruption.
If you choose to attend, we ask that you allow the surveyor adequate time and space to complete the inspection. Questions are always welcome, and we are happy to review observations and discuss findings at appropriate points throughout or after the survey.
